The Photography Factor for Your Destination Wedding

4.18.2011

I am excited to feature Sandra Mikalauskas of White Ivory Photography who shares with us her tips on hiring a destination wedding photographer.
As a former destination wedding bride, I can happily say that my husband and I had an
absolutely wonderful experience! To this day, I gush about my wedding day! Fortunately, I also have beautiful photography to show off as well. As a wedding photographer myself, it is important to think about a few things when booking that important person who will make your memories last a lifetime.
My hubby and I got hitched in Napa Valley, California. Living in Florida, I knew we had to rely on the wedding planner at our venue to make sure everything went off without a hitch. She was fabulous and literally took care of everything, even the photographer. Bear in mind that there are some important things to ask and consider when you are trying to find the right photographer, especially when planning from such a distance.
First off, bear in mind that you will most likely not get a chance to meet the photographer
before hand. Therefore, you should ask your wedding planner the following questions:
1. Can I choose from more than one photographer?
Depending on whether or not you booked a package for your destination wedding, you might be limited to the number of photographers you may choose from. It's important to get a feel for the photographer's style prior to picking one. Dig around, look at their portfolios and make sure that their style of photography speaks to you!
2. Does the photographer shoot film or digital?
I know in this day and age, it might seem silly to ask, but just a few years ago, my wedding
photographer shot film. The reason why I mention this is to consider your post production
options. With film, you can put together a traditional wedding slip sheet wedding
album, however, you won't be able to have a flush mount or magazine style album designed, as they require digital files. You can look into digitizing your film negatives, but consider the additional cost. One other thing to consider as well with film is that you won't be able to get special effects for your photos, a very popular feature of many digital photographers today.
3. What do you want to have photographed?
Don't forget to jot down a few things on your photo wish list. Who and what would you like
photographed? This is a simple task, but is easily forgotten with the multitude of things you
have on your mind! You won't regret it and won't have to utter the words “oh no I completely forgot about that.”
4. How long will the session be?
This is an important question to ask as your wish list will revolve around how much time you have with the photographer.

5. Can I schedule a phone call with the photographer prior to my wedding?
I would strongly recommend placing a call to the photographer in order to discuss the
schedule. At that time you will be able to express your needs and wants for your special day. Trust me, the photographer should be more than happy to have this call with you as it gives him or her the information they need to prepare for the shoot. Bring up any questions or concerns at that time. You don't want to be dealing with that these on your wedding day!
Alas my little brides and grooms to be, I wish you the best of luck! Leave the planning to the pro's so you don't have to worry! I hope you bask in the warmth and glow of your destination wedding. Enjoy every minute.
